Cover: brown cover, inset designs in corners, embossed gold in the middle of the front cover of a village, with trees, and view out to water, sails, clouds; same embossed cover on the back, minus the gold in the center; embossing on binding too, and Wolfert's Roost, a line, then Irving on the spine. Blind stamping for design on the edges of front and back covers; gilt stamping for the center of the front cover. Note diagonal wave pattern background on the cloth (a bit worn); this grain was in peak use in 1855, the time of publication.

Paper Edges: unadorned
Illustrations: to pages before the title page; left page illustrated "The Contented Man" (man, woman, child); the right page, "The Cow Boys" (men on horses herding cow, sheep); tissue paper between these two pages; doesn't seem to have illustrations in the body of the work. Note initials at the bottom of the "The Cow Boys" illustration - J.W.O.P.P ScNY
