Cover: faded brown (possibly original was maroon?) cover, embossed with floral design; center of cover - gold with a dove and an olive branch overhead; stacks of books underneath, and one book open on a tasselled pillow, with "Sit lux" inside. Morocco grain (the first grain developed) and it tends to imitate the leather bound books that preceded it. Note the morocco grain runs diagonally. The spine has the title and a few stripes across it.

- inside front cover: handwritten: J.D. Ray (and some initials, possibly V.D.M.?), Mason County, Virginia, May, the 27 th, A.D. 1852 "Good is the word of the Lord"; then underneath, in different handwriting, is written: "Presented to Elizabeth E. Willey of Morgantown, VA., Oct. The 13 th 1857 By her affectionate brother, (and then the signature is unclear, but it looks like J.D. Ray).
- On the opposite page, there's a plate stating that the text was donated to WVU Library by W. T. Willey.
- Chapters: numbered, with content descriptions, divisions listed in table of contents
- There's a recommendation by Samuel Miller (dated Princeton, June 23 rd 1845)
