Cover: Green sand grain cover, and the grain shows through the gilt on the cover, which is an illustration of an executioner's block, with an ax on the right, and a cloth (perhaps a cloak or a royal robe) on the left with a cross on it. No edging or framing on the front cover. Back cover is green sand grain, with medallion embossed (a bit off center). The spine has stripes at the top and bottom (gilt), the full title, Alfred Tennyson, and a small design (with a lion), and J. R. Osgood & Co. in gilt on the spine
Inside Book Covers: dark brown pages. (plain pages were considered fancier, more sophisticated than designed ones, which were thought to be tawdry)
